PhD by Thesis (Dr)
A PhD by Thesis requires min two quality journal publication with a doctoral dissertation. Initially, a doctoral candidate has to conduct the literature review so he/she may find the research gap. Only then write the research proposal, pertaining to the research gap. The candidate has to explain what will be the contribution to the research field or simply the novelty. With research proposal in hand, anyone may find a research grant to continue his/her research dream and if unsuccessful in getting funds, then the person may fund his/her research by himself/herself. Most of the time, the funding agencies prefer to allocate money for senior researchers (preferably academician) because the academician will have record of quality research and publications. If a person apply to any university for a research grant, then he/she will have to work for its faculty for specific period. This will somehow be categorized as a part-time research work as the candidate have to work (academic duty) in full time mode. Alternatively, the person may fund himself/herself without leaving the job. Within two years, the experimental part can be completed (if any) and then the publication and dissertation parts can be carried out for year 3. A Nobel Laureate has finished his doctoral thesis with only 26 pages and two references.
Double PhD by Thesis (DDr)
A double PhD by Thesis requires min two quality journal publication with a doctoral dissertation and two universities will confer the doctoral award (DDr) collaboratively.
This is possible when two institutions (University A and University B or University A and Laboratory A or Laboratory A and Laboratory B)
share their resources/faculties in completing a common goal. For example, The
California State University (CSU) and
the National Space and Aeronautics Administration (NASA) may award a double PhD for their project.
This is ideal for a research student who fund him/her-self as he/she can chose his/her supervisors who can connect universities without additional fund from
faculties.
Bionics Engineering is
an example as it requires medical faculty (Neuroscience) and engineering (Mechatronics) to produce end product. Like MIT-USA, the great.

for supervision, publication, examination and etc.
Advise For The Self-Funded Researchers
